Collaboration between Maarten Baas and Ted Noten:
A Vision for the future of Den Bosch

Maarten Baas and Ted Noten, both renowned artists, have been asked by the Municipality of ‘s Hertogenbosch to create an art project that connects the historic city center with the new City Delta. This collaboration is not new to them; they know each other from the days of the Design Academy and have worked together before. Their challenge was to create a joint work without losing their individual styles and ideas and, in the process, something that matched the demand from the municipality and the involvement of young artists. So they decided to split their roles: Maarten Baas designed five permanent star gazers and Ted Noten the modern benches and the Future Gazers route through the city with his ‘Miss Piggy’ ring.

Maarten Baas explains that they wanted to involve young artists who have a connection to Den Bosch. So they managed to select three promising artists to produce five small works where you can see through the “Toekomstkijkers” (future viewers). The project “Toekomstkijkers,” literally and figuratively focuses on the future by spotlighting these young talents. Maarten Baas and Ted Noten wanted to find a unique way to spotlight these artworks by the young creators This results in the creation of the binoculars that capture the audience’s attention and offer a concentrated experience. As a result, the artworks become not only a visual connection between the old and new parts of the city, but also a symbol of progress and renewal.

Maarten Baas

Maarten Baas is an internationally recognized Dutch designer and artist, known for his innovative and often provocative designs. His work ranges from furniture and lighting to installations and artworks, often playing with the concepts of time, imperfection and impermanence. Baas’ best-known series, “Smoke,” features furniture that has been treated with fire and then preserved, resulting in unique, burnt art objects. The concept of time and imperfection also returns for the “Future Viewers” project. He has worked with chrome-plated material, which gives a “new and futuristic” look to the artwork, beautifully demonstrating the double layer of a look into the future.

TED NOTEN

Ted Noten is known for his provocative and humorous designs, ranging from jewelry to large-scale installations, and his work can be seen in museums worldwide. This internationally celebrated Dutch designer combines craftsmanship with modern technologies and social commentary. For the project “Toekomstkijkers,” Noten designed modern benches and a walking route with old candy dispensers, offering visitors a “Miss Piggy” ring with a road map for two euros. In doing so, he offers a playful and accessible way to explore the city and its artworks, highlighting his signature style and vision.
